The soda jerk behind the counter says " I am sorry but we are out of chocolate.". the boy pauses for a moment and the asks for a cone with one scoop of chocolate icecream. Again the soda jerk replies " I am sorry but we are out of chocolate.". undeterred the boy asks for a sunday with whip cream, a cherry, peanuts, hot fudge, and one scoop of chocolate icecream. Once more the soda jerk replies " I am sorry but we are out of chocolate.". then before the boy could ask for something else the soda jerk adds " it looks like we are having a communication problem. You look like a smart kid so let me see if we can work this out. Spell "van" in vanalia. To this the boy responds "V A N." "correct" says the soda jerk "try this spell "straw" in strawberry." So the boy says "S T R A W.". again the soda jerk says correct "now try spelling fuck in chocolate." After a brief pause the boy replies a little hesitantly "im sorry sir but there is no fuck in chocolate.". "EXACTLY!" exclaims the soda jerk "that’s what I have been trying to tell you. There is no fucking chocolate!".

He who has all the gold toys makes the rules

There is an old saying that the true golden rule is "he who has all the gold makes the rules" that only really applies if you care about the gold. Personally I think gold is overrated but I understand the sentiment. If someone has what you want then they can control what you do and how you do it. In my case its about toys but the good thing with my love being toys is that the rules are defined and set all I need is … well……gold…. so I guess gold has some value to me but I have enough for the toys I want so we are all good. I received my new laptop the other day and have been busy busy getting it set the way I want. It will still take me a few more days to get it all worked out the way I want it to be but that’s just because it is new hardware and it is fun to play with it to see how I can make it sit up and sing for me.
Quick specs

Intel core duo 2.0g processor

17" wuxga screen

2g of ram

nvidia geForce 7800 GO w/256m of ram on the video card

(and this is not shared ram with the system it is dedicated ram for the video card

60g SATA 7200 RPM HD
(yes it’s a little small I will upgrade that part)

Everything else is pretty standard

WIFI a/b/g

Bluetooth

9 cell bat

3 year accidental damage + service

The worst part about a machine like this is that it cost me more in one chunk then I paid for my car over the last 12 months. But I figure since it is a laptop that I can't piece it together over time like a desktop so I had to get most of what I wanted for 2 to 3 years upfront. I have it running win 2k3 + winXP I got visual studio on it also and it is FAST FAST FAST. In the story of the tower of babble the people all spoke the same language and decided to build a tower to reach god (one interesting note is that this story lives in almost all major religions in some form). God didnt like this and struck down the tower and spread the people across the land. He then also broke up the languages so that there could be no inter communication and there by be no where enough cooperation for a second tower to be built. That is just the general idea of the story since I have not read it in more years then my son has been alive. And today it struck me how much that story relates to things I do everyday. I have spent a lot of time the last two months talking to all sorts of people at all sorts of level about what it is I do. When my son asks what I do at work all day I tell him I make websites for people so they can send there girlfriends flowers (he thinks girls are fine but girl FRIENDS are gross). Because that is what I do and that is his vernacular, he can grasp it at that level. When I try to explain to others what I do it is a little harder. If I start throwing out terms like a bad mama jama and bust out with the PR, TR, backlinks, anchortext, CSS (or ccs as my boss will call it more often then not), load speed, page size, PPC, SEO, natural SEO, SEM, click through, keywords, metaanything, or even just html most people, even if they know the terms, will have to take time to process what I am saying and translate it into a concept they have a firmer grasp on. That is all well and good if people were like my crappy mac which will pause noticeably when it is thinking and processing. People don’t so I don’t know when to stop my diatribe and let them process. But if I do the upfront translation for them and then spit it out in there on vernacular then they don’t have that processing time and I can go ahead at full steam and never break the pipe. When I did sales I hadn’t thought through this whole concept even I was haphazardly creating the ground work for this idea. When I was in sales and still many people in sales refer to something called the golden connection. The golden connection is simply a place that you and the <strike>mark</strike> customer can have a common connection. If they have a dog I have a dog, if they have a fear of tech I only use this hunk of junk because my boss makes me, if they have kids I live with a woman that has kids and although they are not my own I love them as if they were and am looking forward to having my own one day soon. It is a place where they can say this guy is like me and since he likes what he is doing then it must be ok. It really breaks down the communication bearer between the sales person and the <strike>mark</strike> customer. Taking that to a higher level I would notice that when I was in a region for a few days I would actively work on picking up there local phrases and dialect so by the end of the week in any location I sounded local. It was funny I would even do it on the phone when I was talking to people I would start to use there phrases and speech patterns on long calls. Many people thought I was from different parts of the country all the time because of the way in which I spoke. And really it was just my sales man side kicking in. after I got sick (I might talk about that sometime in the future) I worked hard on losing all aspects of the salesman I had formed in myself. But as in the sort of the hippo its not that easy to be something you are not. I am a sales man and I am finding that part of what that means is picking up on the vernacular of the person I am speaking to and then rephrasing what I am trying to communicate to them in that vernacular. One current example is when I talk about SEO and all of its scary associated terms I am starting to rephrase it in more accepted marketing speak so as to not get that disconnect and to be better able to phrase my thoughts in a way that will fit in better to others. Its noticeable who much better my ideas are understood when I use there terms I think it does two main things one I have rambled on about for the last few to many lines and the other is it gives me my own TR for that topic. People like to talk to like minded people and if I use there vernacular then I must have something in common with them, again the golden connection, and if they don’t have to process the idea into there own thoughts and patterns as well as feeling that we are like minded people then im in like flin as it were. The problem with all of this is that it takes time and I have to balance the translation step with getting the idea out in a timely fashion but as I actively do it more and more it will again become a part of who I am and I will not have to spend the active clock cycles to process it. Now I am back to the salt mines. Someone told me yesterday to not talk it all so serious its only flowers. Well that’s true it is only flowers but they still have thorns and thorns hurt no matter how pretty the flower attached to it is.

today is the day of ASS

Today is just on of those days when I am feeling a little off. This is a bit of CSS I have used to make a 3X3 grid using only divs with no tables. I am a CSS zealot and I love to build without tables. I am working on incorporating this into the current sites I work on and since its so simple I thought I would share it with everyone. The way it works is I build a container div for my products I think of it as a self contained code block in that container I build a few other divs to help control the flow of the piece. Once that piece is finished I dump them into a larger container div that holds all of my product blocks. The width of each product block is set and the width of the container div is also set. In this example you would to have to set the width of the container if you wanted a liquid layout this would allow you to have products fill up the width of the users browser. Since my layout is not as liquid as it could be I have set the width to be wide enough to display only 3 product blocks across. Once there are three blocks in the container the float property causes the boxes to float down to the next line. This is an easy solution and I am sure I will use it n many places. I only put one product block in the code in this post but you can look at the live copy and see it with more.

301 redirect with asp.net

Something simple and very common with most SEO projects is the 301 redirect. In the past a company would buy as many domains as they could and point them all to the same site. This gave them better odds of being found as well as making sure someone didn’t get a similar domain name and ranking well for your company. Then the search engines got wise to this trick and started knocking people down in the rankings for duplicate content. There were now two options, release the extra domain names or do a redirect to the one domain name you wanted as your main one. There are two types of domain names one is a 301 redirect and one is a 302 redirect. The 302 is used for moving a resource temporarily it sort of says “hi im over here now but I will be back sometime in the future” this causes the search engines to keep the original url in the index. The other type of redirect is a 301 this says “I am no longer at that address I am now at this new address so don’t look there for me any more” this is the main way you tell search engines you want to have many domain names pointing to one site but only have the content indexed under one of the names. In the linix world and the classic asp world this is very easy. You can just change the .httaccess file. It is also easy on windows 2k3 if you have direct access to the server and are not running in a cluster environment. The sad part of my life is I live n a world where developers do not touch the production boxes and network ops does not make changes to IIS for us on the production boxes for something as trivial in there mind as a 301 redirect. So I had to solve it in code. The basic part of this is simple you just simple need to put in

      Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently";
      Response.AddHeader("Location","http://www.redirectdemo.com" + urlPath());

And you are done. In a perfect world this would be all you needed (in a truly perfect world I would have access to a .httaccess file). But I am also running in three different environments also I want to keep the original path typed in by the user so they don’t just end up back at the home page and have to start over. So this is what I built. First I find there requested path and check to make sure there not requesting the default.aspx file (sometimes google will index the root and the default.* file as different pages). If it is default then I set urlPath to “” if not I set urlPath to the requested url. I then check the domain and make sure it isn’t any of the domain names I want to allow at the step I have to include the domain name I want them to land on if not it will stick in a loop of constantly sending the user back to the original domain name. I built this into a switch just because I don’t feel there will ever be more then a few domains I don’t want to redirect on. If this list was going to be large or if I was going to redirect different domains to different places I would put this into an array. This is all built into a user control so I can simply add it to every page on the site and if I ever want to add a domain name to this I simple have to update the user control and it updates everything at once. This is the first piece of code I have ever released to the public but if this helps anyone please feel free to use it all you want. Also if you do use it or find it useful please let me know.

The full code listing

namespace redirectDemo.controls
{
using System;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls;
///

/// redirect usercontrol. this will redirect all production domains to http://www.redirectdemo.com
about 3 years ago for my home machine. I have then upgraded every piece in it to the max the system will take other then the CPU’s which I had upgraded once but blew out and had to go back to the old ones. Now I want to make one last upgrade to a new set of 2800 procs then let it stay there for the rest of its life. It has 2gb of ram which I could max out at 4 but I would have to pull out the current 2 and replace it all which I don’t want to do. But now that I am looking at a new box I have to really decide if I want to go mobile or keep the desktop. I have not found any good reason to go with a desktop. I can have the power I need on the mobile platform and also not have to worry about the things like upgrades and being tied to the desk. But it feels strange this will be the first big box I have bought for myself that I didn’t spec out and then put together. I must be getting old I am in a phase of my life where I want to worry about my piece of things and let others worry about the rest.

Marketing

Lets see if I can get through a diatribe about marketing with out using anything that would be considered profane. I have done sales at almost every level and I understand the need of sales and marketing. I have a firm belief that with out marketing there would not be the internet that there is today. It ids driven by ad revenue. Now that isn’t to say that every aspect of the business is driven directly by ad revenue but the internet as a whole is all driven by ads. Take my position for example I work on natural SEO. That means that I don’t work with ads at all, but I still depend on ads for my job to work. If it were not for the revenue that google generates from its ads they would not provide all the great new features they offer and the standard internet price for wizbang ($0.00). if google didn’t provide the features they provide then less people would use there service. If less people used there service then that would be less people looking there for what I sell. Less people looking means less people buying. So I would be useless or my job would be less important and would get rolled up into someone else’s job duties. So I am thankful for ads and marketing but at the same time I have to say that I hate being inundated with ads everywhere I turn. I got a marketing call yesterday on my cell. I asked them to call me back later (I know that was stupid but I wasn’t sure it was a marketing call for crap or some of the internet ,marketing firms I have talking to the last few weeks). This morning I got the same people calling but I was still busy so I didn’t answer. Within 30 minutes I got 4 calls from the same firm! What is that now it might just be me but as my wife tells my son from time to time if you pester me I don’t even think about it before I say NO! and I find that most people are the same way even if its to a lesser extent then myself. So how did this person think that I would decide to answer and be in a receptive mood? Well on the last call I answered and the same person that had called me yesterday starts belting out the same crap sales pitch (see that I had a good spot to through in the word ass and I refrained from it) that they had used the day before. They went through it word for word. Then when it came to the question and answer phase they tried to use leading questions but I have been through this and have lead many a sheep through this same trap so I was a little stubborn and forced them to lead. At that point they failed which to me says they don’t know more then the simple script that they are handed. And that makes me madder then anything else. What is it that makes people think that anything can be watered down to its base elements and then accomplished by anyone. Sales isn’t following a script. I doubnt this person has ever heard of Zig Ziglar he is the god of true sales people. But someone thought they could give any random person off the street a cue card and a dialer and they would be good to go. They might get sales and this person might be happy with there commission but think about what could be gained with a little investment in training and good people. Think about all the thought that goes into a large ad campaign and then think about how small the portion of that you spend on getting the right people to do it for you. You see it everywhere like the guys with the sandwich boards I know everyone has seen the guy out there making an ass of himself and thinking something like “that fool” but what you may have missed is that you saw him and you saw his ad now think about the guy that was just standing there you didn’t notice him for that long and you definitely didn’t notice his message. That’s the difference between being a shmo doing a schtict and a professional doing your craft. I don’t sell anymore because I don’t have the heart to do that with the energy that it takes so rather then do it half way I do something else I can do full tilt and win at.

more on Google Analytics

I have looked more and more at the analytics from google. I have also looked at urchin a few months back but now google is back to its new game of giving away everything kewl for FREE. I have not yet gone through it all but it looks to be a great tool from google in place of the thousands you can pay to some people for good analytics from someone else. I will play with this more in the weeks to come and see how good it is but if the past is any indication this will be great. Google doesn’t create the best ideas but they do rebuild ideas very very well. Its like BASF google doesn’t create the things it will rule the web with they just make them better. I use all of there services except for gMail (that is a different post) and they are all great (including the gMail but again that is a different post). If they would just enter the bottle water industry and the hardware manufacturing industry then I would be set. Then today I started over and from the ground up wrote the code I had been working on in 2 hours. Its nothing big its just a CSS version of a table layout that I have to convert to CSS. The part I had been having trouble with was the main body of a site that displays a 3X3 grid of image. Under each image I needed a buy button and next to the buy button a price, item number, and item name. in tables I could write it in my sleep but using CSS I just couldn’t ever get it to work. Then today I walked into work and sat down. As soon as I turned on my system (if you can call it that) I thought of a simple solution. This is a demo of the Layout. a small few things and I can launch my whole new site using nto one table element. So far the estimates are that I will cut 70% off of my total page size by making the CSS switch.

XSLT ROCKS!!!!!

I have been playing with XSLT the last few days and it’s the best thing since sliced individually wrapped cheese. The biggest benefit of XSLT is the separation of business logic and presentation logic. This means that I can build the code and then change the code as many times as I need and not worry about what happens on the presentation side. I also have the ability to do the same thing on the look and feel side of things. The hardest part of working this way is keeping my logic out of my XSLT. I keep finding myself placing logic in the middle of my layout and then going back over it nad pulling those pieces back out. Now that I have a working model I am going back through the xslt and working on ditching the tables. That is another benefit of using XSLT it will allow my pages to be more standers compliant. All of this together and I have a clean easy site that is search engine friendly to boot. Once I have it finished it hope to be able to market this code to help market my soon to be built small SEO firm. If every thing goes well I will be bringing the beauty of XSLT to the masses with my own brand of SEO.

I get it

I remember the day I got girls. I also remember the day I got driving. I don’t remember the day I got high but there are reasons for that. But all and all there are moments when you get it and I just had one of those. I was clicking on the “next blog” button today and started finding myself drawn into some of the words on these blogs. On a few of them I posted a few comments. Then about 10 minutes ago I had to pick up an email from my wife and in my inbox there was a message saying I had a post on my blog. I was thinking kewl more spam I always did love email spam for the first few days when it was much like a new love still fresh and mysterious. But I look over the comment for a sec before I delete it and I notice it doesn’t look like spam it seems to make sense. I reread it and it dose make sense. IT’S A REALY COMMENT! FROM A REAL PERSON! It was a comment from a person whos blog I had just posted a comment on. And that was the moment I got this idea of user created content. This will change the world.

SPAM SPAM EGGS AND SPAM without the eggs

I have ignored the comment options on this blog so far. I went into the comments today and was excited to find that I had comment spam. I am both excited and disgusted at the same time. I am excited that somehow someone has found my blog worthy of spam. And I am also disgusted that somehow someone has found my blog worthy of spam. I don’t know what will ever happen to end spam but something will I am sure it is so much of a problem that it will have to be stopped by the industry or big brother will do it for us and I don’t want that. I don’t understand the profit model for spam. google has depreciated the value of crap links and really links in general and I am sure the other crawlers will do it soon also. Email spam is just as stupid if its porn how many of the sales end in charge backs and on the other types of spam how much trouble is it when they get sued.

I guess I just have to say wow. It was started as a place to showcase my personal graphic design work. I have moved into web development full speed and have not touched the site more then to add a link or two in close to 3 years. I am going to leave to WIP directory as well as the OLD directory because amazingly both get a significant amount of traffic. I will do a quick redesign in the next few weeks nothing special just a little facelift and a little better set of directions on what the different links on the site are. Once I have time and energy I will start doing digital art again and at that point I will pick up little big toe again and start to post art. Its bith sad and happy all at once to make an offical statement that I am not a graphic artist but I am a developer. The sad part is that art has been such a huge part of my life for so long. Art is still something that is part of my everyday. Art is part of who I am and always will be. The happy part is that I am now embarking on a new journey of the life of a web developer. Development is a fun new world it’s a little different developing then it was designing. As a developer when I need something I can just make it where as a designer I was required to call a developer or muddle my way through it as best as me and google could. This will be fun. I think I have posted here before that I will use this as a place to talk about my trek into the land of developers and I will continue to do that as much as I have been I will also use it for everything else I have used it for in the past which is mostly just a place to type where people can see it. all in al its sort of like I am growing up somehow. how sad for me.

dot net data access app

So today I started on my first true .net project at my day job. It’s a small db app to allow me better and easier access to make updates to my content in production. But that is what programming is all about right? Making your life easier and faster. Its something small enough to allow me to also use it as a test bed for learning proper design and design patterns. Well fenny it looks like I will be late home the next few weeks. As long as I finish it by the December 5th when I have my next major code migration.

I know the names of men they had to hang.

So it’s a choice do you do what’s right or do you do what’s asked of you. No this isn’t some huge moral question its just a question relating to code. Someone posed the question to me if they should spend 20+ hours writing a block of code and classes to make a project work the way it should or if they should just do a little code writing by copy and paste. I personally believe its worth the 20+ hours invested to make it right over the “git er done” bullshit you see everywhere. I hate the idea that quick is better then good just because it gets it done faster. Its midnight and I spent the whole afternoon away from my wife and son just to make my own project correct over quick and I feel very strongly that everyone should have the same type of self respect that they wouldn’t put out crap just so they can say its done. Now I am going to lose my audience by digressing into the pit of profanity. Its fucking lazy as crap like that fucking “git er done” as crap shit that makes so many products suck big donkey dick. And after that I have to say I am glad that this is no longer a company sanctioned blog. A salesman I know tells me all the time you can have it three ways good, fast, or right and you can have any 2 you want but you can never get all three at once. I feel this is true for example I am righting code on a machine that I wouldn’t give to my 6 year old son to use but I am writing .net code on it. I am also running 2 test data bases. On a machine I wouldn’t use for a small linux router its so much a stemming pile of dog shit. But its not in the budget to get a new machine. The fuckers that take calls and run a phone app can have 1g of ram and a new p4 but the guys that write the code get a huge cock right up the ass and are told its just as good. For some reason I feel a little when you piss down my back and call it rain. Now I have to ask myself why am I so mad I could just work my forty and go home what the fuck I am wasting a good 10 minutes writing this piece of terd fuck right? But I am typing this over 40 minutes between builds of my project. And I don’t do just enough to get by. I am a good contractor I believe I should work until the project is done then I should stop but not before. And the pukes that think they can work forty and go home can choke on my tiny hairy nut sack as I slave away doing what needs to be done. Now I am going to start my last build and let it process as I go home to take a nap and then start on the pieces of this that can be done disconnected from the network so I can use my 2 year PC that I thought was just enough when I bought it and now is ready to be put out of its burning fucking ass loving life. And as bad as my home pc is it burns huge fucking holes in this piece of crap I use at work. I figured one day I lose about 90 minutes a day watching my work machine spin it tires that’s about 7.5 hours a week 30 a month or 9 weeks a year watching an hour glass on heavy work day. Not every day is that bad some days I only have to close outlook 7 times to free up resources instead of 20 some days I only reboot 2 times instead of every hour. But when you look at it as a whole my ass starts to pucker in anticipation of the ass raping I plan on getting every time I try and run some large job or process.

Goodnight

Wal-Martalways out to screw youALWAYS

I would like to start with a quote

Hey, don't be knockin' Wal*Mart. I talk to a few florists during my work hours and some are doing some things with SEO and some are not. In the group of florists that are doing something some are doing a lot and some are doing very little. A few examples of sites that are doing things are Find a Florist from Teleflora, Sebastian Florist from Florida and 11Flowers a local florist in California. The neat thing about the last florist is he is doing a lot of different things with different sites he has one site that is hosted with Teleflora’s eFlorist program 11Flowers.com he also is trying to do what roses nation wide did with building another page that he has more SEO control of at Flora Rose. This is a great chance to see what part true SEO plays in order volume. I personally am so excited about it because I can use it as a demonstration of what can be done with a more open framework and hopefully use it to force change on the structure I work within today. If a site that doesn’t have as many constraints as the sites I work on have can do better then a site that has similar constraints to the sites I work then it might show to the powers that be the value of an open SEO friendly core system we can build on. it will be fun to watch and see what happens. I would also love to see other florists rise up and do this for there own shops or start there own large order gather site that is well marketed nationally and just sends them the orders there by making them the largest "OG" on the internet with the shop getting 90% to 100% of the order value.

My day job

Before I go into what I was going to talk about I thought there needed to be a brief explanation of the flower industry for the people who may read this that do not know how you really get flowers delivered. Most of the time you want flowers you swing by a local shop on your way to where you need the flowers but when you are not going to the place that the flowers are then you must use another method and this is where the wire service come in most often. If you choose to call, go online, email, or what ever method you choose to send flowers if it is going to a town other then the one you are ordering from it will go through some type of wire service. The wire service is the mechanism that allows a flower shop to have your flowers delivered for you by someone out of town. The wire service guaranties that all parties involved are happy with the transaction and that the consumer gets what was ordered, or at least this is how it is supposed to work.

Now that I have poorly and more importantly briefly described a wire service (you can look at ftd.com or Teleflora.comm to see a wire service). Lets talk about OG’s. I can no longer hear someone refer to someone being an “OG” the same once I started working here. In to non-flower world “OG” is some sort of ghettoism that refers to something I am a little to pale to fully grasp but in the flower world “OG” is something completely different. One way they are the same is that in the flower world as in the non-flower world an “OG” is the most vial label that could ever be bestowed upon someone. In the flower world “OG” stands for Order Gatherer which is someone that just acts as a type of order funnel or hose sucking up all the flower orders out there and then pushing them to different shops around the nation along the way charging a fee of some type. Many florists think this is the most vial practice ever because if they had gotten the order in the first place they would have made more money. This is where I have to ask, because I do not understand, how is it wrong for someone to do something to get more customer’s isn’t that part of business? I have meet many florists that are very talented at flowers, and everything associated with flower arranging but I have yet to meet more then a handful of florists that have any idea how to build, market, and maintain a good SEO optimized web site. I would never think of asking dave (the nice guy who fixes my car) to work on a web site for me. This isn’t to imply that dave would not be able to do this in fact I have seen some of his coding and he has some mad skilz (another ghettoism for flavor) but it isnt his main focus much as I can change my oil and I understand how my engine works but I would never dream of touching it again dave is better, faster, and more experienced at it then I will ever be. In that same light I would never expect a florist to be a good web developer or SEM (new term it stands for search engine marketer). If some of these order gathers did not gather these orders they would go to big players like FTD or PROFlowers (and maybe soon Teleflora also if you listen to some of the florist rumors out there) that drop ship flowers straight from the growers the consumer dose not know or care how they get the order as long as its nice, quick, convenient, and cheap. The problem is that if the order from a place like FTD or PROFlowers they are not getting anything but quick, and cheap. Other big players in the industry are still pumping there orders straight to the flower shops so they are still capturing the order and more importantly the flower customer. I would say to any flower shop that is upset about a “OG” gathering there local business instead of posting on some obscure web site dedicated to florists where you only get seen by a few people go hire a SEM firm and become a “OG” for yourself. You don’t have to target the nation if you only want to do local marketing more power to you that will give you an upper hand over the national order gathers in places like google local and other such local sites. The first rule in SEO and most of business is be as good as your competition and then be better. So now I am done with my rant and I am off to order a few flowers from a florist I know. Fenny will love them.

I will get to it

Blogging to me is much like weight lose

It seems that since I was around 20 I have had the plan to exercise more. From time to time I succeed in this endeavor but it never seems to last long I will get busy and forget to go to the gym and after a few weeks I just give up again. It seems to me that blogging is falling into this same cycle I think about blogging often but I never seem to have the time. I will make a commitment to blog more because I think it is important that I spout off online to fill the either with more noise. I will even do well with it for a few days posting often then I forget and get busy and never get back to it. I have now launched what is being super secret project number 12 and have started working full force on super secret project number 13. 13 will take more time, money, and effort then 12 did but that’s ok since it should also produce more money with less input in the long term. With number 12 we are well on our way to the first rebuild which is almost funny since we just launched. A side note and update on work the new boss is here after the last one lasted 6 weeks this one is being called the October/ November director of web development we will see if he out lasts the title. I don’t know if I want him to or not and it may not matter I may start working on SharePoint again(which I LOVE) so I may get away from SEO or do SEO and SharePoint, now that would be a full day staying on top of google and admin and build a SharePoint site for a large company.

As cars go by I cast my minds eye….

Its Friday, it’s the last day of the week, its less then a week until my new endeavor is supposed to launch, I want to buy a new toy, and I am using to many commas. I have started to explore CSS again and I am finding now that I have explored other types of coding more fully I am getting a better understanding the structure of the css. Things that I just accepted before I now understand the why. I feel that it is time for me to redouble my efforts on my outside projects and see where they can take me. I like what I am doing but I don’t like who I am doing it for. There seems to be an attitude that developers are like any other commodity and that there is nothing more valuable about one developer then the other. You would think if you were going to open a new line of business you would have the foresight to include the people who will be building the code that the new line will run on. I heard a story the other day that shows both ways of doing this. Some time late last year two companies were trying to form some type of partnership company A and company B. the marketing folks (sometimes I have to show I am from the south) from both companies got together and decided it would be a right fine idea if we helped push our products on our respective customers. After several months of discussion between the two companies marketing departments they had every last detail worked out except for one small thing, IT had not yet been brought in on any of the meetings. So the head marketing pixie from each company gets there IT folks and there to come to a large meeting with both companies marketing pixies and the IT trolls. After a few short minutes the IT troll from company b makes a statement “you do understand that we are less then two weeks from code freeze don’t you?” to which marketing replied ” yes but we just thought that…” and before marketing could finish that phrase IT jumped in and continued “ there is no way this will happen at this time we go to a code freeze in less then two weeks and we WILL NOT be making changes of this scale in that time frame if you would like to readdress this after the code freeze let us know but until that time we are through here.” And IT proceeded to get off the call. Now I don’t think that that sets a very good image for company B in the eyes of company A but if marketing had brought in people form IT before the last minute then the whole thing would have been worked out better. IT and development knows what there schedule is better then anyone else and if you need to use those resources you should consult that department before you make commitments based on that need. I will make this short. I am at the search engine show in san jose this week and last night was the “google dance” it was fun free white wine (they also had some sort of beer but that’s not for me) but for the alicholic in me the best part was that they would put the wine in a beer cup if you asked. When I was a lot lit I met a very nice younge man that traded me a google hat for my classic route 66 hat but after he looked at my hat he just gave me the google one. At the end of the night I had consumed more then 10 beer cups of wine and had to be brought homme (to the hotel) and the sad part is some how along the way I lost my hat. And that is all I can write right now I have to get ready for the next big day of the show.

they are widening the corridor and adding more lanes

I am going to start trying to live comfort eagle. I will join the holly cult of the SEO GODS! I am going to spend the next 4 days (weekends don’t count) in sunny California learning all about the latest and greatest wizbang ideas in the world of SEO and SEM (look ma new acronym! Its all about the buzz acronyms now) I guess along those lines I am going to be LCE . after that I get to spend a day in the city where the company I work for has its headquarters. This is also going to be the day I get fired! Not really but its is going to be fun to see how well I can hold my tongue for some reason pretty is more important then ranking. I will make this blanket statement that will contradict all of my spouting off about Americans lack of aesthetics. Peaty has no place in the early design stage of a web site developed for maximum exposure. There now I have said it and I feel better for it. now to explain what I mean it is less important what a site looks like at first until you have a good framework in place then put your designers in there box and let them work. Not the other way around you should never build a design that is set in stone then ask a developer to build a framework behind it. I am a little extreme on this but that is because when I build a design I know enough to think about the framework during the design process I also am willing to change the design if need be to fit the framework. The number one priority of any business web site should be to drive sales and you do this by making it easy to use, quick to load, responsive, and SEO FRIENDLY. If you get every thing other then the seo friendly part you will still lose because the only people that will ever see it are the people you buy through ppc or some other type of paid traffic model. On the other hand f it is piss ugly and well ranked(read Sseo friendly) you will get sales and if you are very well ranked you will get lots of orders. I have to tone down how I say it but right now it’s a simple choice they can be pretty and lose or they can bend some (not a lot), get ranked, and win. I think they are going to choose to lose and I know that after that I will have some trouble watching what I say about that choice even though I know its there’s to make and not mine. My job isn’t to get the sites I work on ranked it is to offer advice on how to get them ranked and then implement the items they chose for me from the ones presented. Now if I say that last sentence enough I think it will stick by next Friday. I guess not. Now I have a title, a better wage, and the same duties so all and all nothing has changed. But I for some reason like my job better and I think it is that I don’t have to worry so much about how I use my time since as long as I get my job done my time is my own. I am good with that I can manage my time better if I don’t have to account for every second of the day I would rather account for how much time I spent on something and then call it done and not have to go back. I can now also work on learning more c# and asp.net I have been playing with some asp.net rewrite path stuff so that when you hit my site I don’t have to have built pages for you before hand. The user can request a page and IIS will intercept that request and build the page for the user on the fly from the data base it works pretty well but I will have to grow it into some type of monster app to do what I want it to do. It is going to handle all of the page requests for the site I am building for speeds long lost brother racer X (racer X’s real name is Rex Racer but don’t tell anyone).

Mach Go Go

I am launching a few things in the next month some I will speak openly of some and some I will speak about in a type of code known to me and a few others. I like to talk to people about what it is that I am doing it helps me stay focused as best as I can so I get it done in a reasonable time frame. One of the many things I am working on are a few new sites one is for speeds older brother the mysterious racer X. one is for pops and chimchim. I am also working on moving this blog to a domain owned by me I don’t know which one as of yet but once I figure it out I will post it here plus try and move my blog from here with all the old content. I am also working on www.redseo.com which doesn’t work right now but will sometime in the future. I am also continuing to learn more and more about SEO and how blogs and other types of content generation fit in to that. In my work for speeds older brother the mysterious racer X as well as pops and chimchim I am having to restart my learning on asp.net and retrain myself in the beautiful art of CSS and graphic design. I have found myself to become reinspiried about the beauty that can be built on the web and not inside any type of box I am going to try and launch a site that is dedicated to cutting edge browsers and bar access to all but the most elite browser. I will also enroll in collage soon to take some writing classes. In my offline life my younger brother is moving in and my older brother is moving out. The one is coming to go to school and the other is going to go to school.

And for fun

Here he comes
Here comes Speed Racer.
He's a demon on wheels.
Chasin after someone.

He's gainin' on you
So you better look alive.
He's gonna be revin' up his
Powerful Mach 5.

And when the odds are against him
And their dangers work.
You bet your life Speed Racer
Is gonna see it through

Go Speed Racer,
Go Speed Racer,
Go Speed Racer go-.

He's off and flying
As he guns his car around the track.
He's jammin' down the pedal
Like he's never coming back.
Adventure's waiting up ahead-.
Go Speed Racer,
Go Speed Racer,
Go Speed Racer go

a month

Its been a month since I have posted anything and now I am going to post a few things. You know, when Bugs Bunny cartoons were playing in actual movie theaters.

I am not sure where I came across this quote at but i do feel it says a lot about the feelings of some people regarding today’s tumultuous times. my wife says i never listen to anything she says. She says this because when she askes me about a specific thing she said to me in the past I have no clue what it is she is talking about. This is not because I don’t love her and hang on every word she feels gracious to bestow upon me its is just that all of her thought about very specific. For example she would love to hve some clue as to what it is that would make her happy but instead of looking at the broad topic of happiness she has narrowed it down to a simple equation jeannie + money = happy jeannie. So with that in hand she has headed off to make the money portion of the equation as large as possible. Me on the other hand think of things in terms of what it will take to make me happy and then I think about the things I would do with the happiness, how I would change what I am doing right now to attain happiness, and always I am also thinking about my sons happiness. But along with all of these thoughts I also think about things like how blogs will help SEO, how to build a better CMS based of the sharepoint engine, how to build a not better but more elaborate mouse trap(duct tape is out I think I have exhausted every lead in that direction, this being said I am sure the answer will involve duct tape). This is not to say I am in any way better then my wife or other people that are goal driven its is just saying I am different to be honest I would have to say I am worse off due to my lack of any chance of gaining t5ue single mindedness for any length of time. This blog is the perfect example I pick it up and put it back down on a whim almost its not that I don’t enjoy it its just that I don’t think about it. I suppose in the current state of the US I would have some dieses that I have heard called adult attention deficit disorder but I don’t know how it’s a disorder. I think for my personal type of being it is best that I don’t know how to focus on a single topic at once because in the coming future the specialization that everyone is striving for will fail. The phrase jack of all trades master of none comes rapidly to mind I was first introduced to this phrase when I was about 16 years old and someone was trying to get me to focus on my future. The problem is that if you look at nature you see that the species that specialize are the ones that are now extinct. That scares me. Now back to where I started after my tangent I like to take the long way to a place but I am going to try hard to make sure I end up at that place in the end. Society is becoming very wrapped up in the idea that these are tough times and that things were better before. Depending on how old the person is the before is different. For my mother before is in the 70s for my grandmother before was in the 50s for me before is now. I saw an illustration after 9/11 where a cartoonist drew America as a sleeping giant that had been awoken and I think that is very true we have just awoken as a country but what doesn’t seem to be pointed out is that the world didn’t change when we awoke and it wasn’t a sudden change that awoke us the world changed like it always does slowly and over many decades the din just got loud enough to awaken the biggest kid in the room. I moved to Europe 21 years ago that’s the time it takes for one person to be born, grow, learn, become an adult, and be allowed to go into a bar and have a drink(if that person is male they can go to war 3 years before that but that’s not really the point here now is it). 21 years is a long time for some 21 years ago would probably be there before that was different. But when I was there I say a place that had road signs much like the one down the road from my house that has a pictograph of 2 children playing and it says “SLOW CHILDREN PLAYING” but these signs had no words they just had a pictograph that was very clearly a tank and tank tracks it was a tank crossing sign. This is the same time that we were told on scout outings to the local camp grounds that we were not supposed to pick up anything that might be metal because it could be left over from my grandmothers “better time” and it could be undetonated ordinance and might leave you with one less appendage then you had before you touched it. I also have fond memories of being chased down the street by teaming masses of young national children bent on doing harm to both myself and my friends for the high crime of being American. This is nothing new it has been going on for years the world hates our attitude of “we are the best” not because we feel we are the best the world understands national pride much better then we do but because we not only stand up and shout it as loud and as long as we can we also try to make every one shout it with us and this is where the problem comes in. its not that I don’t love my country and the freedoms afforded my by it I just feel that we need to be less focused on how we can make others see our point of view and maybe clear up our point of view first, then maybe less shouting and a little more talking would prove more advantageous. I wonder when fenny’s “better time” is.

Tokku

her knees thrust in the one direction like a symbol of math the symbol meaning greater then.

Do you ever hear a line in a song that just hits you. You have heard it a dozen times but never really heard what was being said. This I would say is the problem with the human brain being wired to hear sounds and patterns and out of a small sampling of the given sound decide what the rest of the sound is going to be so it doesn’t listen to it. Work at what? Work at being at work. Work is such an important of japans culture that they had places to go even after being laid off they could work on there resumes, work on improving there skills, or what ever else it was that had to be done during the day. At first this is a hard concept to comprehend for most people from the US where it is all about “what’s in it for me”. In Japan when you buy a company you don’t first off look for ways to eliminate staff they are part and parcel with the purchase you don’t just buy a single piece of a company you buy all of its assets and part of its assets are its employees. The men and women that make up that company have value beyond there paychecks. So you have to ask what wrong either with the US or with the damn japs. I think most eastern cultures have the right idea work isn’t about what you have to do to get through the week and keep the lights on its about what you have to offer society as a whole that makes you valuable. I have value as a person and that value is more then a place holder in a staffing report. I ordered a new screen for the screen printing machine today that says “you cant fire me slaves are sold!”. There is some type of social cancer that is tearing at the whole of society in the US that saddens me very much. When my grand father was young he joined the navy because it was an honor to serve his country. When my father was young he joined the navy because if he didn’t the selective service would have made him join the army and for all of his faults he isn’t stupid and its better to be well trained and on a boat then trained as a bullet catcher. When I was young there were people who were refusing to go to war which at first sounds like there choice except they were members of the National Guard and when asked about it they said yes they signed up but they never thought they would really have to go to war. What the fuck you say? It’s a whole social idea that you don’t have to really be responsible for your actions. And it’s mostly just America that seems to feel this way. its like you get as high as you can and get as much power as you can as long as you don’t really have to be responsible for anything that happens at the point that something is not the way it should be then its someone else’s fault and you shouldn’t be held responsible for anything because its not your fault. I am typing with such passion that I am weaving from side to side as I have to type different sides of the keyboard. I feel very passionate about being responsible for things and I try hard to impart that feeling of responsibility on my son and the people I come in contact with on a daily basis. I never want to be given anything I have not earned be it title, tools, money, fame( and I never want fame), or anything I could ever be given but I do want to receive what I feel I have earned and if the person is not willing to relinquish it I would like the truth about why. I must stop here and say I am NOT whining about my job today I am content to do the job asked of me and do it to the best of my ability until the day they take my badge or ask something else of my time. I am just I am just saddened by what appears to be the utter loathing of the employee on the part of the employer in most companies I have had the pleasure to deal with. It is as if we are a burden on the employer like some poor needy child that won’t go away no matter how many times they get kicked in the face. There are good companies out there in the US and some are among the best in the world but there are many that are not and don’t care if they ever become the best to there employees they just want to be the most profitable and they will get there at any cost. Now its time to get off the cross, build a bridge and get over it. I had started this post wanting to speak about the joy I get from learning new ideas and it turned into a diatribe about my view of the employee employer dynamic in corporate America. If I had more time and there were more letters in me right now I would expound upon my feelings of corporations as a form of government but I am out of letters to string together and someone else has done it much better then I could hope to do. Read Harvest of Stars its not a good book but it’s a good idea there are many books I put in this category they would be much better if the author had allowed someone else to translate his ideas into words for him. For now I hope this will be my last post of such dark and rambling subjects lets all just be happy for the bravery of being out of range.

Goodnight fenny

Insanity

Is it more sane to talk to your self or someone that doesn’t really exist? I started this blog as a trial for a business related idea I wanted to test after I tested for a short time I scraped it and made this a personal blog to just play with the idea of a blog. I have changed the title and changed the theme of the site. The question now is should I still worry about what people that work where I do might think about what I post here or people that know where I work and are that companies customers think about what I post? A better question is did I ever care and I think the answer to both would be no. I do this on my time with my thoughts and my resources so why do I care what people think about what I post here? In case I have been unclear I will layout the things that might get me in trouble and get them out of the way. I feel I am getting the hard corporate cock shoved in my tiny anus and I really am not braced for it so it has caused a little tearing and pain. I feel that it was shear luck that the company made it past the first year if it was run the way it is being run then the way it is being run now. I feel there is a distinct lack of understanding of what is being asked of me and what results they really want out of it. I feel it is just not myself that is getting ass raped by this company but many other great people as well. I feel that I have spent to much time thinking metaphorically about my ass being assaulted for it to be healthy. I feel that my stress here is causing me to have many problems with both my wife and son and I don’t think that is a good idea. I feel that the project I am working on is going to fail due to lack of understanding of the scoop of SEO on the part of upper management. I feel that I do a great job and can do an even better job if left the fuck alone. All of these things start with “I feel” and that is the most important thing of all its all about how I feel. That is why this is a personal blog now. I plan on continuing to write about how I feel this is sort of like putting a video camera under my mattress and letting you see my diary. If your are cute and fun loving I will put the camera on top of my mattress just send me an email. The important questions that I can answer now are no I am not planning on leaving over not getting a title or promotion. No I am not going to be dedicated to this company and I have sent out resumes to many people to see what’s out there. when I leave this company it will be because I have gotten tired of the full feeling I have in my ass and the feeling that it will never go away as long as I am here. Its as if I have to leave before there is a value placed on what you do here and that is a type of cancer that has its core at the top of a company not the bottom. They always say when you work for yourself you work harder then you ever work for someone else and the reason that is always given is that you are working for your self. I have to agree with that but not for the implied reason its not that your working for yourself rather then someone else its that your are working for someone that you respect I will give my all to someone I respect and I cant respect someone that I feel has no respect for me. In the last 7 days I have been told i want to waste the companies money. I am not as valuable as some salesman. I don’t rate a title to match my job. Everyone thinks my job is important but it shouldn’t require tools. Side note how is a 350 yearly expense for a subscription to a tool and an information source a lot of money to any type of organization. I have been told that I should just be patient but I have done that before with this company and after a year of waiting I left then on the way out they asked if they could keep me with more money. The money isn’t the important part and that’s what makes it so hard I really hate money I just have to have it to do the important stuff so when all you address on a list of issues is the one I state as the least important how am I supposed to think you have heard anything I have said. Now I am rambling so I will turn it off and get home.
Blood makes noise.</justify>

god wants silver, god wants gold,god wants the secret that will be told

When do you know its time to go out on your own and leave the corporation behind? I think when it becomes a chore to rise from your bed every morning with the impending feelings of dread at the realization you have to spend more of your life in the concrete box that is work. Not that I mind working I just really don’t like helping people who don’t realize how valuable there employees are to the overall business. The idea that a person can be changed as quick as a stick of ram. This something that I can never understand. I feel like using short sentences this morning. Each line a single part of a thought. It’s the bravery of being out of range. There is no connection to the employees that serve them. The dark overlords. I want to ware my shirt that says “You cant fire me. Slaves are sold!” and I hope they get a good price for me because I am going to be sold soon if things don’t change. Or does it matter if they change is simply being allowed to do my job effectively worth the fight or should I just give in and go elsewhere where the value of what I do is recognized already and then just struggle to do my job better then any other living human being? But I found this story about religion and thought I would share it with both of the people who read this blog. I for one think the sate should never tell me what I can and can not say in a public forum. The story is about not being to have a religious vanity plate because the state doesn’t want to endorse a particular religion. I’m not sure on the stance here where I live but I can assume its true here as well and if so how is a good moral decision for the state to support a sports team and not a religion? God needs a Wednesday night pro game on network TV and I think this would end the whole thing. Now that I have thrown myself into SEO I have noticed that I am starting to look at every page from an SEO point of view. I went to a popular site I like to visit a lot and for the first time I saw all of the bad things done to it in terms of SEO. I have also found myself writing my posts here with a sort of SEO slant that I didn’t write before whice to me means I have made the switch. I once read a story about when kids learn 2 different languages at an early age there is no internal translation both languages are just natural but when you learn a language as an adult you have to think in your native language and then translate it into a different language. No matter how fast that happens and how fluent you are it still has to go through a translation. With me and my skills I find that when I really grasp something is that moment when I start thinking in that setting.

-Jon

what am I worth (what is SEO worth part 2)

Yesterday I was looking at what is SEO worth because I was trying to decide what it was worth for me to do the job I am being asked to do, well today I was told what it was worth to the company I am working for and I am not sure if its enough. When I look at the abstract of what is SEO worth it is a generalization about the SEO job. This generalization does not take into account things that are of a personal nature. When I look at myself and ask the question I have to also include in the calculation things like my sons tuition and my car and house payments. I also have to look at how much I want ( or in this case don’t want ) to go looking for a new place to work. I also have to wonder how much room there is to negotiate. The hard part is I am a very results driven negotiator and I only have a short list of results to negotiate with. I will also have to look at how this will affect my work with my web design company Red Frog Labs since it is an outside site from my employers’ site. Yes I can throw a page together and then I can stumble through posting it to a server and the people at godaddy can help my get it the domain name setup but then what? its not like the IBM ad where the orders fall on top of you and crush you with the sheer weight of the money you are going home with each and every day. no it takes work and lots of it I don’t think you can do SEO part time and be successful at it. you have to be on top of three search engines and then on top of your site. i have one site that rankings number one on google for the phrase “red frog labs” and that is great but its only 6 pages and who is going to be searching for red frog labs. When you start looking at doing SEO on a larger site then it becomes a much harder thing to accomplish and a harder thing to maintain. You have to worry about things like theme and freshness of content. so when you try to determine worth do you break up the job and say each of these pieces is worth a set amount and then add up the total? I don’t think that takes in to account the “glue”, for lack of a better word, that holds it all together. If you try and find a similar job then that’s not much help either because SEO is a new field. But that should be common since most of the web and technology jobs are really new fields. As a freelance SEO expert you could really sort of set your own rates and then if you are good enough and are not to far out of line you will succeed but as a corporate lackey how do you go to your bosses and express a need to increase your salary. What I have done is look at the money already being spent with outside firms doing SEO for us then scale that by experience and current knowledge of our existing system. I also adjusted for my time and what I need to make for my 5 year plan to stay on track and I came up with what I thought was fair. It is less then some people in this area are making for much less work but it is enough for me to pour myself into this SEO project and make it a success. I am also working on a few outside SEO projects and as a freelancer working with small businesses I am just charging a percentage all the little sites I am working with depend on advertising to drive revenue so if I get them more traffic I get part of that revenue I would love to implement this model at my day job just 1/10th of 1 percent of the increase in revenue and I would be able to retire after two years.

-Jon
there like pants

It seems to me that there are a lot of people that think the pc should be a toy. I just cant look at it that way I feel the pc is more like a pair of pants in that its something you have to have to function in society. I start to try and think how I could work without internet access and or pc access and it comes down to it that I cant. I use the internet for my news, work, research, study, communication, and really just about everything else. But what I don’t use it for is my entertainment. I don’t want to watch TV on my pc I don’t want to watch movies on my pc I don’t really enjoy playing many video games (there are the odd few I get into but they are few and far between) I have a good TV for programs I have an ipod for music I have a Nintendo (and every other game system) for my gamming which I do love. Not that there’s anything wrong with this type of use of a pc I am very glad that people are using there pc’s for more it makes them more mainstream and there for its increases my access to better, faster, and cheaper technology. My son is sure to have a different view of this but that’s for the future, for the present it’s late and time for me to turn off my pants for the night and climb in my new bed.

Titanium Powerbook

I must talk a lot about my titanium power book which strikes me as odd since the only reason that it should come up is that its newish to me. type='text'>Its all about flowers

I hate flowers. Its strange to me the way a job effects your lifestyle. What do I mean by that well for example in my own life when I worked fast food I got to where I couldn’t stand to eat at any fast food restaurant when I sold jewelry I got the habit of not wearing any for of jewelry ( my wife and I are still working on getting me to wear a wedding ring after almost 7 years ). And now I work for a flower wire service and I have started to hate flowers and the giving of floral gifts. This is strange to me because I have had graphic design jobs and I didn’t start to hate drawing or being creative I have been a dedicated code monkey for the last 3 years and have still not hated for a single second typing a line of code I have even been working on computers for many years over many different jobs and I still spend over half of my disposable income on more computer equipment. So what is it about some jobs that makes me hate the core components of the job. I think it comes down to effort the less effort I have to put into a job the more I seem to come to loath it. With out struggle there is no growth and if there is no growth then it doesn’t involve any type of effort and if I don’t have to think about why not automate it and spend my time doing something else. Every time I think about this subject I remember a time when I was 18 working a fast food job and I was told to straighten ketchup packages in the ketchup bin. When I questioned to reasoning of spending my time doing this the response was since I was on the clock and there were no customers they had to find something for me to do. ……….. ok so there is nothing that I can do that is harder then straitening ketchup packets? Wow then I can just go home and read a book. And that’s why I had the record for the most times to quit at that store but since when I was there and they were busy I was fast and good they would always call and ask me to come back a few days after I quit. I think I have always been that way I don’t feel the need to waste my time and effort on something just for the sake of keeping busy. I worked in an office one time for almost 4 days I had to leave when they told me to make sure to look busy when the boss walked by even if I had nothing to really do ( which seemed to be most of the time from what I was being told). If you have work for me to do great if not I can find something better to do then sit there and look busy. And this brings me back to why I start to hate parts of some jobs its because it seems to me like there is work that can be automated better then having me do it. Then I could spend my weekend with my Sabian ( my son ) or I could be studying for my MCAD or I could even be reading the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy for the 5000th time. Its not that I feel above the task at hand its just that my strengths are in different areas. Ok now I am done whining about having to work and hating flowers and I am going to get back to pulling up the current rankings and then when I get home I am going to write a program that will pull in all the different rankings and the different sites I need to monitor and then I will be done with this work and I can go on to other things.

Closing tag on my posts

i think for the next few posts i will try out having a closing tag on my blog posts and see how i like the look of it

update
this failed it sees my closing tag as html code and dosent show it on the site
i will try again later

Its Mothers Day

Its mothers day and I work for a flower wire service. Once you start working for a flower wire service like Teleflora of FTD you start to look at holidays differently. We have seen an improvement in site ranking on yahoo and some on google as well. It looks like I may have gone to the far extreme on the keywords and put some of the sites on the test into the area of word spam. I am going to pair down the keyword usage and raise the fluff word usage to see if I can get a better content level and also by using fluff words I hope to raise my them score. The hardest part of SEO is the waiting you have to make changes and then wait for a crawl to see how they effected your ranking but at the same time other people are making changes so sometimes its hard to say if any change in ranking is due to you getting better or worse or if one of your competitors has done something better or worse and you are moving because of them changing there spot. I do have some sites that have gone from nothing to being in the top 5 on google and or yahoo but I also have a very few that went the other way so I will now have to start the analysis of what has been done and tweak the sites to make the good ones better and the bad ones good. SEO is such a moving target it could still take months before we know for sure what does and doesn’t help and by how much. But for now it seems that links and content are 2 of the biggest factors another big factor seems to be site size. This helps because the more pages you have in your site the more chances you have to talk about your topic and direct links that are keyword rich to pages in your site. For example if I have a 10 page site with each page having a link with the word flower pointing to my flower page then that’s 10 times I have said I know about flower but if I have a 1000 page site with the same link to my flower page then I have just said I know about flower 1000 times so I must be more confident about flower and this is really the expert on flower. Things that don’t seem to help are keyword and description meta tags these seem to be completely ignored by google and I am sure yahoo and msn will follow suit soon. Which makes sense the search engine makes money off advertising and the more people that can come to your site the more people that will see your advertising. If someone comes to your search engine and always gets bad search results then after a few times they will go else where and as traffic drops so does ad revenue so it is in the best interest of the search engines to keep there results clean and reflective of what people are wanting to find from there searches.

Florist Blogs

So I had this idea about using a blog to increases traffic to an eFlorist site ( really many eFlorist sites). It has been up for a month or more now and I am still not sure how well it is doing. It could be that I don’t write or it could be that it just doesn’t help. It could also be that google hasn’t found me yet. I am still getting hit upside the head every day by something new that google seems to do. For example I have a site for my personal art work and some other stuff called little big toe I have had it for a long long time and I checked it on google and it has been indexed but when I check the cache on google it has little big toe listed as having been cached on Jan 31, 2004 03:05:22 GMT. Why so long? I don’t know. I have another site Red Frog Labs and it has no cache but its all text and has been there for years as well. I don’t know I will have to look at this more in the days to come and see if I can find an answer. Another idea I had to get fresh relevant content on a site and to increases the rating is to include an rss feed on the site I have it working ok on the eFlorist test site the problem I have now is to find a floral web site that doesn’t promote any florist specifically. I have found a few I will look at and watch to see what type of news I can find. I also thought about adding a local rss feed to help increase the overall theme on the site. I don’t think it will be to hard to find local rss feeds about cities like New York or Atlanta or even Oklahoma city but little towns like Shawnee are hard to find things for I think just due to size. I will post as time permits on the findings.

Bruce Clay SEO and other things

So im off to Bruce Clay SEO training at the end of next month. Now its just a matter of getting all my questions together so I know what I want to ask and being ready to take some good notes. I will be taking the power book so I can follow along in class and at the same time have something I can test code on. I wonder what it will be like to try and writ html on a Mac I have tried and failed to do any type of .net but I still haven’t gotten to try mono which should work ok. I hope to learn many new things that can help me out with eFlorist SEO as well as SEO for my red frog web sites as well as my other side projects. I hope to revive red frog soon and turn it into the powerhouse of web design that it should be. I have some of the florist sites being crawled by google as I type I hope to see the results soon if I start to see some results soon enough I can do some more tweaking before I have to present the results. I would think that with the current goals of the test coupled with the competition it should not be hard to get good ranking for the florist sites in the test. If you focus on flowers, florist, flower, and florists you are going to fail but if you instead focus on <city> flowers then there is much less competition and there for it is easier to get ranked. Now that being said it also depends on what your <city> equals if <city> is equal to Dallas then you are going to have a tougher row to hoe then if <city> is equal to Podunkville. Its also important to know your keywords for example do I really want to focus my effort to make my page relevant to my pretty flower shop name in Podunkville Texas only if people are going to be looking for that instead why not make my page relevant to Podunkville Flowers that way I can focus on that and I can also get people out of town who don’t know the name of my shop and really don’t care to know it. I plan to share some of what I have learned about SEO in the last few weeks with the rest of the custom eFlorist department so it can help our current batch of florist web sites going forward. I am done with my rambling on about florist web sites I will now get back to work on them.

spam on a blog

i have to put this out here but i wont make it a link. it looks like the same type of crap people use to get past spam filters you put enough garbage out there and the spider sees it as good.
i just have to say
wow

http://plastique-melon.blogspot.com/

Flowers but not really

this is very interesting to me. Looking at my adsense links they have switched. The first few days they were all about the flower links. I have to apologize in the middle of this I am going to ramble on for a few lines the go back to bed I have slept only a few hours since yesterday and i am worn out. Now all of the links are blogging links the first one was a little funny it was how to writ a blog so I wonder if this could somehow be used as some sort of measure of what google thinks your site is about. So if I sit here and talk more about SEO and FLOWERS and FLORISTS and flower seo and what not will it get me a better ranking. We were talking about me wrapping up the first part of this SEO test and I have to present my results in about a month so I would be working a lot over the next 2 days and the first question was “ if you are going to present in about a month why are you in a rush to finish in 2 days so I explained to her about the waiting game you play with wed development and SEO. You make your changes and then you wait to be crawled. Then you change and wait and change and wait. The wait part of this can take as long as a month. Which is hard since if you do something wrong you can’t fix it for a month after you see the problem. Most of my changes are done and most of it I think is good at this point. After that it comes down to tweaks so I guess we will see what happens. I will say I have seen more floral and flower web sites then I would ever have thought were out there some are total hack jobs that look like there done by the shop owners 12 year old son ( which by the way is what I want to be when I grow up a 12 year old ) and then you have the other side of the spectrum where you can tell someone put some real time into the site and it looks nice. But like most things you have a few on the outer extremes but most of the sites are in the middle there not bad there just not good. I might have to post a worst of the worst and a best of the best sometime soon.

</Jon Stephenson>

random link post

http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/MacPAR_deLuxe/
http://www.parkersoftware.com/

G4 Titanium Powerbook

Ok so I have now had a G4 powerbook for close to 2 weeks now and I have had the full range of emotions about it. When I got it I was scared I haven’t touched a mac since os7 was new. After a few hours I was excited about this new computing experience and angry that I hadn’t tried it before. I have seen many articles about designers and web developers getting one for kicks and then switching completely and I was starting to feel the same way. I wanted a new desktop and I thought why not get a dual g5. then after 2 days I did a ground up install of the OS and I have to tell you I loved it I have never installed an os without having to know anything my first thought was my mother could do this ( my mom is the woman who thought her email was broken because she wasn’t getting messages she sent to herself as tests so I said “did you hit send/receive?” and she said “hit what ?” her email now works great. ) . Then I had my first thought of “ man that’s stupid windows doesn’t even do that anymore”. After I did a clean install It went right in and wanted to do system updates so me being the windows guy I am I think of course it should want to do updates and let it but I also go around and jack with this new system I have. After about 30 minutes of downloading and installing updates my screen goes dark………… and stays that way ……………….. . I finally have to hard boot the box and it comes to a screen saying something about loading login window ( which is sort of funny ) and sits there doing nothing. Since this is a mac I don’t have a “ press F1 to go to the bios “ so after going ot my other machine I find its hold the “C” to boot from CD. So I have my second experience with the mac OX X install and still love it as much as I did an hour ago on my first experience with the mac OS X install. Then I go in and it wants to do updates and this time I do nothing while it does its updates ( like my OLD WINDOWS 98 OSR1 INSTALL) but this is ok with me since I am a windows guy I am used to having to change how I work based on the version of OS I am installing. So after all of this I now am off and running and I get to the way kewl stuff for example when I got the machine it had MS office on it and a few games all I had to do was copy them to my ipod and then when I was through installing I copied them back. I found out I can even use the ipod as a boot device which just rocks I can use any device I can connect to the machine as a boot device. I then proceed into using the office apps and the few games that were on it and there great. Now for the second blow to me switching to a mac. The second worst thing in computers is getting a new piece of software and installing it and being told you can run this software because your system is to new ( like when I try to run some win 9X apps on win XP they fail but not many ) . so I go to the store and let my son who is 5 buy any game he wants and he got something from some newish movie and we take it home and we install it and we watch it come up with a screen saying “ you must run this in OS 9 compatible mode “ or something like that . now like I said the second worst thing in computers is having to step down to run an app or game the WORST thing is trying to tell a 5 year old why this new game he got for dads new laptop wont work. I don’t like that! So I try to figure out how to run in OS 9 compatible mode and I find out I must first install OS 9 ? ! .. WOW!!!. Some stuff on the mac just works and just works well like when im testing sites for my SEO project or I am righting docs about my SEO project. Something’s just don’t work any better then windows and some of them work worse. So I don’t think im going to convert whole hog this is a sexy laptop and I will keep and use it for some stuff but its really just a toy to me.

WOW!

Ok so posting everyday hasn’t worked out so well. I have all these ideas that I really want to get down but just never seem to have the 5 minutes it would take to do them for example right now I am watching before sunrise on the powerbook I have the ipod playing the new moby on the desk speakers I am also switching back and forth from this blog to the new template I a m working on for allen ( one of the florists in my SEO project ). This is somewhat of my standard modus operandi I don’t seem to focus on one thing at once well. As I have been thinking about the blog I have decided something i can do is to research different styles of writing and see which ones work well for me then hone in on one style and refine it to an art. The scoop of that is immense seeing as how right now I couldn’t even identify the style I write in most of the time and there is not much of a chance that I could come up with a different style to save my life. On that note I will have to remind myself to look at amazon for books on writing and go from there. I am going to write out a list of different topics I want to write about and then I will take one off the list every day for a few weeks and see how that goes this will help me have some idea of what is going to come and what has been already. I will post this list for the world to see. One thing I seem sure of is that this will work much better if I just decide that someone else is going to at some point read all of this and have an opinion on all I say and let me know what that opinion is. So now the list

First on the list is anti Microsoft crap on the web in a word ( or 3 ) Get over it

web dev

web design

stupid a$$ web tricks that do not work ( this refers to something else I will post about on web standards)

development and code standards

love and poetry ( I will even post my poetry which should be great fun)

discontinued product lines that I don’t feel I can live with out

art

MACS and why I think I will never want to own another one

PCS ( not as in sprint I just don’t want to use punctuation )

blogging

web design vs web development

CSS and SEO

Im not sure how much it really helps but I can’t see how it could hurt to try and build a page using full css for placement and style. This helps get all the extra code out of the document allowing your keyword density to be higher as well as your content to code ratio. This being said I still see a lot of terrible sites that show high rankings I wonder if this is because they have a lot of back links and have been around for a long time. Or it could be that search engines have gotten smart enough to not care about things like not using tables for anything other then tabular data. I am getting ready to launch 2 sites with very similar urls that will focus on some obscure keywords like "Samarian rock cutting devices in present day use" or "my roommate has 3 toes with pink toe nail polish on them" I am building both sites with the same key words and metatags also they have the same images and the same ip the only difference will be one letter in the url and one will be built in css and one using old style tables. On the table site I will use Bruce clay's table trick and on the other I will use pure css. I understand pure css doesn’t work for all types of designs due to browser compliance so I will make the design something that can work with pure css and work cross browser. This will allow me to test if using a css layout with all other factors being the same makes a difference. Each site will have 4 pages of content with each page having a minimum of four paragraphs and 3 images. i will then post them at the same time and on the same search engines and see what happens. Once I get the urls and the sites up I will post the addresses here.

posting everyday

I have seen and sometimes read blogs by people that seem to post everyday I dont know how that seem to do that I guess we will see what happens and if I can post everyday. Teleflora is a flower wire service. the pages I will be working on for the test will be.

Bakanas Flowers
Flowers to go online
The Flower Concern also known as 11flowers
House of Flowers, Inc.
Gizmo's Flowers & Gifts
Bices Florist

My goal will be to see how I can better code their web pages and still stay with in the framework of a teleflora eflorist flower web site. The goal is to help out the florist gain a larger presence on the internet and to help them compete with large online flower order gatherers. I am also pursuing bloging and thought I could bring these two things together. Over the next few months I will keep this up-to-date on my efforts for the flower shops and I hope I can find some good techniques to help all of teleflora's eflorist sites.

test post

this is my first test post
here are a few links to sites i work on
little big toe
red frog labs
two ton studios
