As cars go by I cast my minds eye….

Its Friday, it’s the last day of the week, its less then a week until my new endeavor is supposed to launch, I want to buy a new toy, and I am using to many commas. I have started to explore CSS again and I am finding now that I have explored other types of coding more fully I am getting a better understanding the structure of the css. Things that I just accepted before I now understand the why. I feel that it is time for me to redouble my efforts on my outside projects and see where they can take me. I like what I am doing but I don’t like who I am doing it for. There seems to be an attitude that developers are like any other commodity and that there is nothing more valuable about one developer then the other. You would think if you were going to open a new line of business you would have the foresight to include the people who will be building the code that the new line will run on. I heard a story the other day that shows both ways of doing this. Some time late last year two companies were trying to form some type of partnership company A and company B. the marketing folks (sometimes I have to show I am from the south) from both companies got together and decided it would be a right fine idea if we helped push our products on our respective customers. After several months of discussion between the two companies marketing departments they had every last detail worked out except for one small thing, IT had not yet been brought in on any of the meetings. So the head marketing pixie from each company gets there IT folks and there to come to a large meeting with both companies marketing pixies and the IT trolls. After a few short minutes the IT troll from company b makes a statement “you do understand that we are less then two weeks from code freeze don’t you?” to which marketing replied ” yes but we just thought that…” and before marketing could finish that phrase IT jumped in and continued “ there is no way this will happen at this time we go to a code freeze in less then two weeks and we WILL NOT be making changes of this scale in that time frame if you would like to readdress this after the code freeze let us know but until that time we are through here.” And IT proceeded to get off the call. Now I don’t think that that sets a very good image for company B in the eyes of company A but if marketing had brought in people form IT before the last minute then the whole thing would have been worked out better. IT and development knows what there schedule is better then anyone else and if you need to use those resources you should consult that department before you make commitments based on that need. Now I am rambling again so I will flutter off.

at the hop

So I went to the google dance and I got a google hat. I will make this short. I am at the search engine show in san jose this week and last night was the “google dance” it was fun free white wine (they also had some sort of beer but that’s not for me) but for the alicholic in me the best part was that they would put the wine in a beer cup if you asked. When I was a lot lit I met a very nice younge man that traded me a google hat for my classic route 66 hat but after he looked at my hat he just gave me the google one. At the end of the night I had consumed more then 10 beer cups of wine and had to be brought homme (to the hotel) and the sad part is some how along the way I lost my hat. And that is all I can write right now I have to get ready for the next big day of the show.

they are widening the corridor and adding more lanes

I am going to start trying to live comfort eagle. I will join the holly cult of the SEO GODS! I am going to spend the next 4 days (weekends don’t count) in sunny California learning all about the latest and greatest wizbang ideas in the world of SEO and SEM (look ma new acronym! Its all about the buzz acronyms now) I guess along those lines I am going to be LCE . after that I get to spend a day in the city where the company I work for has its headquarters. This is also going to be the day I get fired! Not really but its is going to be fun to see how well I can hold my tongue for some reason pretty is more important then ranking. I will make this blanket statement that will contradict all of my spouting off about Americans lack of aesthetics. Peaty has no place in the early design stage of a web site developed for maximum exposure. There now I have said it and I feel better for it. now to explain what I mean it is less important what a site looks like at first until you have a good framework in place then put your designers in there box and let them work. Not the other way around you should never build a design that is set in stone then ask a developer to build a framework behind it. I am a little extreme on this but that is because when I build a design I know enough to think about the framework during the design process I also am willing to change the design if need be to fit the framework. The number one priority of any business web site should be to drive sales and you do this by making it easy to use, quick to load, responsive, and SEO FRIENDLY. If you get every thing other then the seo friendly part you will still lose because the only people that will ever see it are the people you buy through ppc or some other type of paid traffic model. On the other hand f it is piss ugly and well ranked(read Sseo friendly) you will get sales and if you are very well ranked you will get lots of orders. I have to tone down how I say it but right now it’s a simple choice they can be pretty and lose or they can bend some (not a lot), get ranked, and win. I think they are going to choose to lose and I know that after that I will have some trouble watching what I say about that choice even though I know its there’s to make and not mine. My job isn’t to get the sites I work on ranked it is to offer advice on how to get them ranked and then implement the items they chose for me from the ones presented. Now if I say that last sentence enough I think it will stick by next Friday. Quick fenny make a sign “will code and grumble for food”

A rose by any other name.........

So what’s in a name or more appropriately for this topic what’s in a title?

WEB DEVELOPER

Did you hear the trumpets? I know I did!

Ok so now I know what I am I guess I was confused before for I was under the impression I was a web monkey. I guess not. Now I have a title, a better wage, and the same duties so all and all nothing has changed. But I for some reason like my job better and I think it is that I don’t have to worry so much about how I use my time since as long as I get my job done my time is my own. I am good with that I can manage my time better if I don’t have to account for every second of the day I would rather account for how much time I spent on something and then call it done and not have to go back. I can now also work on learning more c# and asp.net I have been playing with some asp.net rewrite path stuff so that when you hit my site I don’t have to have built pages for you before hand. The user can request a page and IIS will intercept that request and build the page for the user on the fly from the data base it works pretty well but I will have to grow it into some type of monster app to do what I want it to do. It is going to handle all of the page requests for the site I am building for speeds long lost brother racer X (racer X’s real name is Rex Racer but don’t tell anyone).

fenny is very proud.
